Dr. Melvyn D. Bert departed the Bert Eye Medical Group Practice in September 2018 after 45 years in practice and service to the people of San Francisco. An upcoming letter to all his patient's will be published here on the website.
MELVYN D. BERT, M.D., F.A.C.S.
After graduating from the State University of New York, Upstate Medical Center in 1967, Dr. Melvyn D. Bert, M.D., F.A.C.S. did an internship at San Francisco General Hospital. He then served in the U.S. Air Force for 2 years during the Vietnam War. After this he spent 3 years of residency at the world renowned New York Eye and Ear Infirmary where he trained in ophthalmology. He has been appointed Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of California, San Francisco, where he teaches medical students and residents in ophthalmology. He served as Chief of Ophthalmology at Marshal Hale Memorial Hospital, which is now part of the California Pacific Medical Center. Since 1995 Dr. Melvyn D. Bert has worked as an integral part of the Tibet Vision Project and is the Director of Training for the Lhasa Region. He was named Humanitarian of the Year in 2012 from the State University of New York, Upstate Medical University for his 19 years of work on behalf of the Tibetan ophthalmologists and the people of Tibet. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. In addition, he is a Fellow in the prestigious American College of Surgeons (F.A.C.S.). He is also a Fellow in the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Ben Bert departed the Bert Eye Medical Group Practice in May of 2016. He has joined the faculty of the Doheny and Jules Stein Eye Institutes/UCLA Department of Ophthalmology.

BENJAMIN B. BERT, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr. Bert is an ophthalmologist and subspecialist in cornea and external disease. He is an honors graduate of both UCLA (2004) and SUNY Upstate Medical University (2008). He completed his internship in internal medicine (2009) at the St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, the University Hospital for Columbia University in Manhattan, where he was named the outstanding preliminary intern. Dr. Bert then completed his ophthalmology residency at the prestigious New York Eye and Ear Infirmary (2012), where he was unanimously elected chief resident by the faculty, staff and residents. At the end of his training he received the award for most outstanding resident. He completed his cornea and external disease fellowship at the Doheny Eye Institute at USC in Los Angeles in July (2013). As part of his fellowship, he also trained in the care of pediatric cornea and external disease at the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles (CHLA). He is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at UCSF where he teaches residents and medical students. In addition, he is an attending for the Lions Eye Clinic at California Pacific Medical Center where he also teaches residents. Dr. Bert is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABOP.org).
While Dr. Bert does comprehensive ophthalmic exams, his specialties include: refractive surgery (LASIK, PRK, etc.), treatment of complex corneal diseases (corneal ulcers, scars, keratoconus, Fuch's dystrophy amongst many other dystrophies, recurrent corneal erosion, etc) both medically and surgically, dry eye, blepharitis, cataract surgery, and many more. Dr. Bert is well trained in the use of premium intraocular lenses (IOLs) that are used in cataract surgery; including the astigmatism correcting Toric IOLs and the presbyopia correcting Multifocal IOLs, for those that do not want to wear glasses after surgery.
